Washington County Animal Shelter teams up
with PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’ Program®
(FAYETTEVILLE, ARK., APRIL 2014) – In a concerted effort to reduce euthanasia, Washington County Judge Marilyn Edwards is pleased to announce Washington County Animal Shelter’s acceptance as newest shelter participant in PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’® - a program that transports adoptable dogs and puppies from overcrowded shelters to animal shelters where there is more adoption space and more opportunities for a new home.
On April 4th at 8:30 a.m. in the morning, a PetSmart Charities® Rescue Waggin’® vehicle arrived at the Washington County Animal Shelter in Fayetteville to pick up 19 dogs for a life-saving ride. The Washington County Animal Shelter prepared for months for this big day, which included sending several staff to receive Canine Behavior Assessment training in Dallas, Texas, and Memphis, Tennessee.
In the training, the staff learned how to select dogs and puppies for the transport, conduct behavior-assessments, and ensure that all dogs being transported are healthy and ready to take the ride. “This program is a great opportunity for us to better help the overwhelming number of dogs entering our shelter every day,” says Angela Ledgerwood, Director of Washington County Animal Shelter.
Now every month, the Washington County Animal Shelter will select adoptable dogs and puppies from their overcrowded shelter for transport on the Rescue Waggin’ vehicle. These dogs will then take an air-conditioned custom ride to their destination shelter, where there are more opportunities for a new home. Once they arrive, the dogs get 12-24 hours of ‘down time’ before getting a medical check-up, their spay/neuter surgery, and placement on the adoption floor.
“With three to four million pets still euthanized across the nation each year, we created the Rescue Waggin’ program to help shelters achieve their goals of getting more adoptable pets placed into good homes – wherever those homes may be,” says Jan Wilkins, Executive Director of PetSmart Charities. “Dogs that may languish at one shelter are generally adopted within a week of arriving at their new destination shelter.”
PetSmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ program operates under professionally-developed industry standards for humane transport. As one of more than 60 shelter partners in the program, the Washington County Animal Shelter will also be eligible for capacity-building grants for spay/neuter expansion and shelter improvements, free on-going training programs, and professional consultations to improve shelter facilities and operations.
The Rescue Waggin’ Program operates in the East Coast, Midwest, Great Plains, and South Central states. More than 70,000 dogs and puppies have been saved through the Rescue Waggin’ program since it began in 2004.
